Many moons ago in a land far, far away (originally Japan), Nintendo bestowed a piece of heaven unto the people of earth. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time not only took the throne of the much-loved series, it became the game that legends are made of – a true timeless classic.
Ocarina of Time follows Links adventures through the land of Hyrule, a land that up until this point had only ever been witnessed in 2D. With plentiful lush scenery, some mind-boggling dungeons and a troupe of huge bosses to battle, Ocarina of Time is the perfect game to receive a 3D makeover.
A truly amazing tale through time, it’s an RPG at heart and is big on progression of character. Every now and then players are rewarded with new skills, extra energy or new items, and each of these perks enables our hero to access new areas or interact with objects in a new way. Things never feel like they stop evolving.
The familiar and famous sounds are back, from the annoying fairy Navi that constantly tries attracting your attention, to the gleeful chirps of when an item of significance is discovered. Its nostalgic audible gold bought back to life by the much improved 3DS speakers.
In despite of the Zelda series growing with subsequent releases, nothing quite compares to this outing specifically. The storyline is never overbearing nor is it too simple, the side quest are never too daunting yet they are plentiful, and the sheer weight of the content is heavy but perfectly manageable. It's no lie that Ocarina of Time is one of the best video games of all time.
The 3D visuals are easily amongst the most impressive seen on the 3DS. There are points when the player may begin to go a little cross-eyed, but it generally helps to suck them into the game a whole lot more.
Another new feature that further helps to enrich the experience is the display on the touchscreen. Not only does it constantly provide a view of the map, but it also offers up a bevy of information about items and more.
As well as being a place that's an absolute hoot for any Ocarina of Time fan to rediscover, this is the perfect opportunity for newcomers to witness the magic of Hyrule at it’s best. It's a stunningly beautiful place that's now portable for the very first time.
Not wanting to sound too cliché, and certainly not wanting to sound too much like an ageing man, it pains me slightly to mutter these words – they don't make them like this anymore.
