COMMUNITY singing is now top of the pops, and one of Hampshire’s most successful choirs is to stage a major event in Southampton next month.
The popularity of the BBC television series, The Choir, and then The Military Wives Choir, both presented by choral leader Gareth Malone, has sparked an enthusiastic resurgence in the popularity of singing.
The Romsey Male Voice Choir is joining forces with the award-winning Michelmersh Silver Band to perform at the city’s Turner Sims concert hall on Saturday, July 13.
Originally formed in 1995, the choir has performed concerts both at home and abroad.
Founded by the late John Taylor together with Keith Lawrenson, the choir’s president, there are now more than 60 members.
Ever since it started, Romsey Male Voice Choir has raised funds for charity.
“In 2010 the choir itself achieved charitable status and this added impetus and scope to our charitable activities,” said Hannalie Bekker-van de Merwe, the choir’s musical director.
“We now have a target sum of £3,000 to raise every year and our intention is not only to meet, but to beat this target with the help of supporters, sponsors and audiences.”
The choir meets every Monday to rehearse, and welcomes new members.
Entitled ‘Spring Into Summer’, the Turner Sims show starts at 7.30pm.
