MUSICIANS from across the south will journey to the Turner Sims Concert Hall this weekend to take part in a remarkable event that celebrates the life and works of composer Joseph Haydn, 200 years since his death.
All in aid of Comic Relief 2009, the Haydathon aims to perform every one of Haydn’s 104 symphonies in three days, starting today.
The Haydathon is the brainchild of several music graduates from the University of Southampton, and has grown from their initial ideas into an enormous project encompassing several local orchestras.
Known as ‘the father of the symphony’, Haydn wrote 104 in total, ranging in length and difficulty. The aim to perform all 104 in one location over consecutive days is believed to be the first attempt of its kind.
Beginning with a free lunchtime concert, the Haydathon continues with five key ticketed concerts and free open sessions.
For tickets, call 023 8059 5151 or visit turnersims.co.uk.
