IT’S hard to ignore John Barrowman – he’s everywhere at the moment.
Not content with presenting prime time BBC talent show Tonight’s the Night, the Doctor Who and Torchwood star is also bringing his UK tour to the Portsmouth Guildhall on Sunday and the Pavillion in bournemouth on thursday.
The tour will feature songs from his new album Music Music Music, including the Gary Barlow-penned What About Us as well as songs from John’s big-selling album Another Side.
“All of the songs will relate to myself and be driven by stories and anecdotes throughout the performance,”
says John.
“There’ll be songs like I Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You, Rhinestone Cowboy and a couple of Latin numbers so I can shake my booty!”
When it comes to putting on a show, the 42-year-old singer and actor knows how to get an audience on its feet.
“There’s no doubt people will get up and boogie. On my last tour, you could see everyone dancing and clapping.
“When they come to my show, I want them to feel like they’re sitting in a massive living room where I’m singing for them and telling stories.
“Even though it’s a big space, it’s a very intimate show.”
Despite being born in Glasgow, John speaks with an American accent after moving to the US at a young age.
“My father moved us when I was about nine years old due to work commitments.
“But the real reason I learned to speak American was because kids would make fun of the Scottish accent.
“I was bullied and was determined to beat them at their own game...so that’s why I speak like this.”
Returning to the UK in 1989 to study Shakespeare at university, John had to wait until 2005 to find fame after landing the role of Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who.
The TV character proved popular, and he received his own spin-off show, Torchwood, now in its third series.
“The new series airs in June or July and we’re moving to BBC One.
It’s extremely popular and I would love to do a fourth series. It’s more edgy, with themes that are more adult than Doctor Who.”
With much-loved Doctor Who actor David Tennant bowing out of the long running sci-fi series, I ask John about working with the newest Doctor, portrayed by Matt Smith.
“Everyone always asks me this, he’s hideous!” he laughs.
“No, really he’s a nice guy. When I first met Matt, he said he’d love for the Doctor and Captain Jack to cross paths. Though just talking with him, it felt like I was having an affair …like I’d cheated on David!”
John has appeared in countless TV shows over the past few years, such as Any Dream Will Do, How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? and I’d Do Anything as well as appearing on the celebrity ice-skating show Dancing On Ice.
But it’s not just on TV screens and in theatres that you’ll see more of John Barrowman.
He said: “I’ve been to the south coast many times, especially Studland, where I have friends with houses. Let’s just say I’ve been there quite often.”
■ John Barrowman will perform at Portsmouth Guildhall this Sunday (box office: 023 9282 4355) and Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre on Thursday (call 0844 576 3000).
