ITS stage has been filled with famous musical talent over the past decade – and on Saturday the legendary venue will celebrate its ten-year anniversary in style.
The Cellar nightclub has played host to numerous international music acts over the years, including soul diva Beverley Knight, pop star Ellie Golding and rapper Professor Green.
How to book
The 10th anniversary soul party will be hosted by artists Soul 45, Route 2 Roots and The Petty Crimes and guests.
Tickets for the event cost £5. For anyone wishing to purchase a ticket, visit The Cellar and buy them over the bar, visit southamptoncellar.com or email joe@southamptoncellar.com.
Jazz superstar Amy Winehouse also visited the club in 2007 following a gig at Southampton Guildhall.
The nightclub was originally named the Greene Cellar when it opened in 2001. It soon developed into a club called the Soul Cellar, known for promoting funk, soul, hip hop and jazz music.
Owners Jonathan Greene and Kevin Coffin had a vision to transform the former pub building into a successful club.
Saturday will see the launch of its new official name, The Cellar.
Events and marketing manager Joe Garfath said: “We want to stay true to our roots, but the name change will open us up to a wider market and we can cater for all genres.”
The club is situated within Southampton’s ‘Cultural Quarter’, a thriving hub in the city centre that has seen many developments over the last year.
Joe said: “We are so excited by what is going on. We want to be involved in everything that’s happening.”
Reflecting on the past decade, Joe said: “We have hosted many different shows across every genre of music, as well as hugely successful comedy.”
The club is now looking forward to the next ten years. A host of gigs is lined up for the coming year including hip hop shows and club nights.
Joe added: “It’s a massive achievement. We are in increasingly tough times where people are going out less and less. We have seen the club grow throughout the years, and Saturday is a celebration for us.”
As a club continuing to thrive in the current climate, Joe revealed the secret to The Cellar’s success: “It takes a lot of hard work and persistence. The atmosphere and the friendliness is our secret – we’re a place where you can always get a smile behind the bar.”
