2008 was an incredible year in the world of arts and entertainment.
We at Scene South were on hand to bring you all the news and reviews from top theatre, music and culture.
Here’s our guide to the very best the year had to offer: Best gig: Without a doubt, the rejuvenated Oasis. Noel, Liam and co were back to their best at Bournemouth International Centre in October and delighted the crowd with new hits from Dig Out Your Soul as well as a host of old classics.
Best show: My surprise favourite of a fantastically varied year in theatre was The Wedding Singer. TV stars Jonathan Wilkes and Natalie Casey brought the house down at The Mayflower in July with their hilarious musical throwback to the 80s.
Best new restaurant: When celebrated chef Raymond Blanc opens a new eaterie on your doorstep, there’s not really much argument about the new hot place to dine. The Michelin-starred chef was joined by another TV favourite James Martin for a fantastic opening night in March and Brasserie Blanc in Winchester has continued to do good business since.
Best new bar: The summer opening of gigantic Oceana has changed Southampton’s club scene for the better, but my chosen launch night was of Revolution back in February. There were stilt walkers, ice sculptures and a host of lavish entertainment over the three floors at the VIP opening night.
Best ball: It was a glamorous occasion even 007 himself would have been proud of. Bond fans dressed in their finest for a glitzy charity ball at the C ity Cruise Terminal in October, followed by a premiere viewing of Quantum of Solace.
