COVER your ears everyone.

My heart sank at the speculation that Wagner is to cover Creep by Radiohead on X Factor’s rock themed show this weekend.

I can’t possibly watch or I will be screaming at my TV set for the tuneless wonder to leave our indie anthems alone.

No-one is safe it seems from the dreadful cabaret act whose laughable bid to win this year’s contest is fast gathering pace.

The wannabes have already been let loose on covers of songs by the likes of Oasis and Snow Patrol just this season.

I’m not sure why it still frustrates me. After all, over the years, X Factor contestants have systematically destroyed much of our musical heritage. But this is just a step too far for me.

On the other hand, if the ‘vote for the worst’ campaign gets its way and Wagner does manage to lift the X Factor crown, it will do nothing for the credibility of talent spotter Simon Cowell and could even trump his Zig and Zag days.

Some would say Wagner is the ‘star’ he deserves. But I doubt even that would teach him to leave well alone when it comes to rock’s great back catalogue.

A win for Wagner, just like a win for Ann Widdecombe on the other side, might well spell the beginning of the end for X Factor and Strictly.

And I’m all for devaluing reality TV’s attempt at world domination, but not at the expense of my eardrums.
