CHILDHOOD nursery rhymes were never like this. In Blag It!’s unique take on the subject, while the characters were familiar, the scenarios certainly were not. Here, Red Riding Hood was a possible serial killer, Goldilocks a sleuth, the enchanted woods were under threat from developers and, Mary Mary was leader of a protest group.
Witty, clever, yet endearingly silly, this was a production that had the measure of its core audience and pandered perfectly to it.
Still slightly rough around the edges on its first night, the production moved at a nifty pace, made good use of the auditorium and had some enjoyable recurring jokes.
The interplay among the players, who were comfortably settled into their roles, was lively. Emily Barlow (Red Riding Hood) and Hannah White-MacKenzie (Goldilocks) in particular had great fun with their characters, depictions that were light years away from the usual image.
Grown-up fun.
