Following a disparate group of eight students, their ever-patient dance instructor and sharp-tongued pianist, the play charts their progress towards a charity show performance while introducing their stories.
Directed with nimble style and great empathy by Jacquie Arnott, the production hit a high comic score rate without diminishing the dramatic moments. The lighting was cleverly done, particularly the fade-outs of scenes.
This was very much an ensemble piece, enlivened by excellent performances all round.
Each player had their moment in the sun and nailed it with precision.
Peta Reading (Mavis) ably anchored the story.
Caroline Hanks-Farmer was great comic value as the dippy Dorothy and gained some of the biggest laughs.
The tap-dancing skill of the cast was impressive and the audience could only gasp with admiration at their transformation into swans.
Uplifting fun.
