IT’S like falling into a record collection left in the attic, with classics from Roy Orbison to the Shadows and Billy Fury.
And even if you don’t remember the songs from when they were on the wireless you’ll remember your parents humming them.
Dreamboats and Petticoats had the audience dancing in their seats at the Kings Theatre in Southsea from the first song as it took them on a trip down memory lane.
The show opens with Bobby as an older man reminiscing to his granddaughter about his youth when he aspired to be a pop star like his idol, Roy Orbison.
The audience are then taken back in time to a 1960s youth club where teenage Bobby, played by Stephen Rolley, is on a quest for fame and love.
A quick-witted script joins up the songs as characters comment that Coronation Street won’t last and that if the whole country lived beyond its means there’d be a crisis.
Hannah Boyce’s performance of leading lady Laura is particularly spectacular and she shows off her powerful voice in songs including Teenager in Love and the title song, Dreamboats and Petticoats.
And before the curtain goes down 1961 Eurovision contender, Mark Wynter, who plays Bobby’s dad, takes centre stage to perform his own hits from the ’60s including Venus in Blue Jeans.
All in all, the show is a must-see, especially for anyone who remembers the songs and the fashion of the era.
The show is at the Kings Theatre, Southsea until Saturday.
