ONE approaches a show like this – the story of the Women’s Land Army (WLA) told by four representative figures – fearing that it will just be another repetition of that tiresome theme, how great everything was in the Second World War.
But under BOB HEATHER’S meticulous direction this excellent cast really give us the feeling of sharing actual lived experience, remaining true to the origins of the Lions Part’s play, largely based on letters and interviews with WLA veterans.
Posh Poppy (EMMA PORTLOCK), broadens her experience and shows pluck. Vera (GEORGETTE ELLISON) relishes the chance to wear slacks. Peggy (DANNI FLETCHER) proves equal to everything and even finds love. And Margie (JANE HARTLEY) learns where milk comes from!
These four work brilliantly together, aided by the Studio’s intimate space (Heather also takes credit for set design), smoothly introducing other characters, singing and making us proud again and excited about Plaza Future.
