Sleeping Beauty
Gantry Youth Theatre
Bitterne Park School Sixth Form College
In presenting the tale of Sleeping Beauty, Gantry has included much that was familiar whilst making it its own and sprinkling in humour, music and dance.
There was an engaging enthusiasm amongst the large cast and a real sense of vibrancy to the big musical numbers. First night nerves were evident, however, and the production still needs to settle a little more comfortably into its groove.
There were some eye catching performances, and not just from the dames, although Bailee Parkes (Queen Matilda) and Owen Dennis (Queen Latica) were splendid. Their rendition of Sisters are doin' it for themselves was one of the high points of the show. Special mention should also be made to Elise Shepard as the evil Queen Carabose, Ettie Robins as Weaver and the hero and heroine Molly Fox (Aurora) and Miles Davis (Prince Philip).
