LOS Angeles 1988. Two Hollywood producers are poised on the brink of their big break.

Charlie Fox (Matthew Hendrickson) brings his old and more successful buddy Bobby Gould (Mitchell Mullen) a sure-fire box office hit starring an Alist actor.

Speed the Plow was written by David Mamet, well known for his wordy dialogueso much so that the phrase ‘Mametspeak’ was coined.

Because of this wordiness the first scene was at times a bit hard to follow.

However, once your ear had adjusted to the speed of the dialogue and the plot began to develop it became an extremely entertaining journey into the power/money-hungry world of the movie business.

The cast of three (with Nicola Stuart- Hill co-starring as temp secretary Karren) were all excellent and totally believable in their roles.

The play benefited from having Americans play the roles of Americans in the cases of the leading men meaning that dodgy accents were not an issue.

The play covered some interesting time honoured themes of power, sex, money and the loss of innocence, tackling them from a fresh angle.

When the curtain fell on the third and final act I could not believe how quickly the last two hours had passed and know I’ll be thinking about the play for some time to come.

Runs until Sunday.
