MEMBERS of Fareham Musical Society are busy putting the finishing touches to their forthcoming production of West Side Story, to be presented at Ferneham Hall, Fareham between Tuesday and Saturday.
This popular musical, now in its 52nd year, is based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and tells the story of love between a local boy and an immigrant girl, set against a backdrop of clashing street gangs in the west side of New York.
The storyline runs true to its Shakepearean model, with things looking good for the young lovers, but when Tony – much like Romeo – accidentally kills his lover’s brother, whilst trying to break up a rumble, violence erupts.
With lots of well known melodies and modern dance routines, this musical has received rave reviews for its unflinching portrayal of gang life and remains as relevant today as it did when first produced.
