THE curtain has come down on the Oscars of the South.
A sold-out audience of 450 theatre lovers got dressed up in their finest for the most glamorous event in the amateur dramatics calendar – the Daily Echo Curtain Call Awards.
The glittering tenth annual awards, held at the De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel, were presented by special guest star Valerie Leon, the 70s screen siren who starred in such cult hits as many of the Carry On films, two James Bond movies and hammer horror Blood From The Mummy’s Tomb.
The coveted production of the year prize was awarded to West Meon Theatre for Cider with Rosie.
Describing the production, our judges said: “Every once in a while it is a privilege to watch a production that gels into almost perfection – this was one such occasion. Nine actors created 32 very distinctive roles with outstanding quality and a superb blend of comedy and sensitivity. Unmissable.”

Guests at the evening, hosted by the Daily Echo’s editor Ian Murray and entertainments editor Lorelei Reddin, enjoyed a drinks reception, three course meal and musical entertainment from the Rusty Blues band from King Edward VI School.
Members of Fareham Musical Society, Music Theatre South and CCADS also took to the stage before party-goers danced until the early hours.
The Daily Echo would like to thank the De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel for sponsoring the drinks reception, lighting and sound team Mike Andrews and crew, Asda Totton for supplying the champagne for winners, printers Hampshire Press and all our sponsors.
