WHILE the score might hark back to its inception in 1970s rock culture, Encore Youth Theatre’s Godspell was a thoroughly refreshing and contemporary affair. At turns funny, poignant and heartfelt, the production brought out the best both in the musical and the multitalented and excellent cast.
Tightly directed and well choreographed, it made exemplary use of the auditorium. The dramatic use of lighting, combined with striking costumes, hair designs and make up melded together into a visually stunning experience.
Doug Revolta has continued to mature as a performer. His Jesus was a towering performance: the charming and charismatic leader of the pack. He was ably matched by Joe Pickering in the dual roles of John and Judas. Jo Cole impressed as tomboy Robin, while Vicki Lampard exuded sass and charm as Sonia.
This was a bravura performance which told its message well.
