Most people will know Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in one form or another. The tale of family rivalry, enduring love and tragedy needs no introduction.
The company, directed by Ed Howson, presented a pure translation, with the acting taking the fore-stage, unhampered by over-complicated scenery and costuming.
Jo Sleight (Romeo) was superb in the role, drawing the audience into his thoughts and emotions. Playing against Vicky Wilson (Juliet), the pair made a convincing and handsome couple. The supporting principals were also strong with Meriel Shepherd (Nurse) standing out with her tirades and caring chastisement. Colin Pritchard (Mercutio) also presented a bold characterisation, with his bombastic and mischievous persona.
The performances were slick and the pace kept the story alive. An outstanding first night performance, which deserved a bigger audience. Rebecca Case
