TAKE an extraordinary journey through an intoxicating world as the award-winning physical theatre company Gecko – fresh from an international tour – reinvent Gogol’s famous short story The Overcoat at The Nuffield from Tuesday to Saturday.
In this hugely inventive fantasy, Gecko use a riotous blend of physical comedy, bold movement, cinematic images and evocative music to reinvent the classic tale of a downbeat draughtsman fixated on a glamorous new coat.
Inspired by the unruly spirit of Gogol’s masterpiece, Gecko have created an exhilarating world where a man’s thoughts spill out into everyday life, blurring reality with grotesque fantasy to present a vivid critique of modern consumption.
In a futile government department reminiscent of Chaplin’s Modern Times, Akakki falls in love with the beautiful Natalia. But his feelings for her are not returned, driving him to become the best and win the ultimate office prize – The Overcoat – revered by all as a symbol of success. But how far is Akakki willing to go?
