It is the highest honour that can be handed out in British cinema.
Now a young Hampshire actress is set to rub shoulders with her fellow stars of stage and screen, after a film in which she played a lead role was shortlisted for a BAFTA award.
Rosie Day from Winchester told the Daily Echo that she was “delighted” after she was given the news that the film Good Night had been nominated for the best short film at the prestigious awards ceremony.
The 18-year-old made the film last year, and in it plays a 14-year-old girl who, with a friend, venture into London for a night out, but in doing so find themselves well out of their depth.
Directed by Muriel d’Ansembourg, the film has already received recognition at a number of international film festivals.
It was joined in the BAFTA nominations by a host of international stars and big screen blockbusters.
Daniel Day-Lewis is nominated in the Best Actor award for his performance as the US president in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, which has 10 nominations.
Also nominated for best actor is Hugh Jackman for his role in Les Miserables, part of which was filmed in Winchester. It has nine nominations, as has Life Of Pi.
Javier Bardem’s performance as Bond villain Raoul Silva in Skyfall has been recognised with a nomination for Supporting Actor while his co-star, Dame Judi Dench, is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as M in the same film, which has eight nominations.
Rosie is currently on location in Serbia, where she is playing a lead role in the new Warner Brother’s film Ironclad: Battle for Blood.
She said: “I have just been told about the film being nominated for a BAFTA, which I am over the moon about.”
The BAFTA ceremony takes place in February at London’s Royal Opera House, which Rosie said she was “very excited about” but whether she would be attending depended on her filming schedule, as once she returns from Serbia she is straight into filming her next movie called Sixteen, by award-winning director Rob Brown.
A film she made last year called The Seasoning House, in which she plays a deaf and mute orphan, has already received critical acclaim and is due to be released in the UK in June.
Rosie featured in the Daily Echo last year after she won a part in ITV drama Homefront.
The teenager, who lives with her parents Julia and Richard in Winchester, got into acting by chance when her older sister was cast in a TV drama, and producers needed a younger girl to play her sibling.
Rosie, a former Hampshire Collegiate pupil, said although her career was taking off it was her family who kept her feet on the ground.
