It was a tall order, but a herd of giraffes have been rehomed at Chessington World of Adventures for a new multi-million pound safari attraction.
The four Rothchilds giraffes were transported in huge 6m trailers before settling into their state-of-the-art enclosure at the Surrey site.
Giraffes Tonda, Kismet, Karamoja and Kito travelled the length of the country from zoos including Hampshire’s Marwell Wildlife, Paignton, Port Lympne and Woburn. The endangered species will spend time getting to know each other ahead of the launch of the site’s new attraction, “ZUFARI: Ride into Africa” in March. Only a few hundred of the Rothchilds giraffe are thought to be in the wild, and after two years, the theme park’s zookeepers hope to welcome a female to add to the species. The giraffes are native to Kenya and Uganda and are distinguishable by the lack of markings on their lower legs.
