MORE snow is forecast to fall across Hampshire this afternoon and temperatures are set to plummet, weather experts have warned The Met Office is predicting parts of the county could get as much as two inches (5cm) by the end of today.

The Southampton area could get flurries of up to half an inch (1cm).

Forecasters are also warning of further snow tomorrow and another whiteout towards the end of this week.

Overnight temperatures could fall in the city to -4C (25F) and -8C (18F) in countryside areas where there is deeper fresher snow lying, particularly in the north east of the county, increasing the risk of icy roads.

Commuters heading towards London either tonight or tomorrow morning are being warned to expect delays.

Further flurries of snow tomorrow will combine with temperatures of around 0C (32F) in Southampton and it will stay icy.

A yellow warning for ice in Hampshire that was out across the county over the weekend will remain in place tomorrow.

There is also a chance of rain, which because of the cold temperatures, could freeze bringing further ice in the area.

The Met Office said a weather system running along the south coast would bring a mixture of rain, sleet and snow in the next few days as far as Wednesday morning and that temperatures will remain around 0C (32F).

Wednesday and Thursday will be dry, but very cold, with temperatures at night getting down to -8C (18F) in the countryside and -4C (25F) in the city and a couple of degrees above freezing during the day.

“People need to be aware of the very cold weather we have got at the moment and there is the possible risk to travel because of the ice,” said Helen Chivers, Met Office forecaster.

“There’s no sign of the cold letting up this week. Ice is going to stay as a big problem for the Southampton area through the week.”

She said there is a possibility of further snow later in the week heading into the weekend with very cold air across the whole of the UK and a milder weather system moving in from the Atlantic bringing the risk of snow when they meet.

However, it is too early to predict this for certain or how much snowfall, she added.

The south had around two inches (5cm) of snow on Friday, bringing travel chaos for many, and temperatures have remained around -1C (30F).

Southampton Airport today remains open for business but there are several cancellations and delays due to de-icing of aircraft and poor weather destinations.

South West Trains has returned to its usual timetable following a reduced service on Friday and Saturday, however, customers are advised to still check before travelling.
