SOUTHAMPTON'S Polish community give thanks for Independence Day.

As Britian marked Remembrance Sunday generations of the Polish community gathered to pay their own respects for the important anniversary, which is also held every year on November 11.

The day celebrates Poland achieving independence in 1918 after 125 years of occupation. This year the date also had added significance as it also marked the 60th anniversary of the first Polish people to settle in Southampton following the Second World War.

Families were first accommodated at a camp in Hiltingbury near Chandler's Ford, beginning the region's long term affiliation with Poland.

In celebration of the two dates, a concert was held at the Polish Parish centre at Portswood Road in Southampton.

Pupils at the Polish School took centre stage for the second part of the concert by performing songs and poems on the theme of Independence Day.
