SPACE for Peace, an interfaith event, will return for its fourth consecutive year to Winchester Cathedral today.

It will feature music on the theme of peace from many cultures and faiths and has been devised by the Professor of Applied Music from the University of Winchester, The Reverend Professor June Boyce- Tillman.

Participants include Rabbi Mark Solomon, cantor Jacky Chernett, Winchester Community Choir, Bournemouth University Chamber Choir, String Gems, Blue Sky Choir, The King Alfred Singers, SOHO (Sing Our Hearts Out) Choir, The SONG (Sounds of New Gospel) and local school choirs.

Incorporating the city’s official marking of Holocaust Memorial Day singers will perform from around the many chapels and corners of the cathedral on the request of the audience.

The event starts and ends with peace chants from many cultures as collected, arranged and conducted by Prof Boyce- Tillman.

The congregation will move around the building, lighting candles, praying and participating in creating the overall musical sound.

The inspiration behind the first Space for Peace was the professor’s choral piece Peacesong, performed in Winchester Cathedral seven years ago.

Hannah Curtain, director of Foundation Music, said: “This is an exciting event for both the contributors and the people who come to listen. The interfaith element and its focus on peacemaking ensures it is a unique experience, which we’d hope lots of people will want to share with us.”

Space for Peace runs from 7pm- 9pm and doors open from 6.45pm. Admission is free and there will be a retiring collection.
