TO mark the most widely celebrated occasion in Chinese culture, the University of Southampton Confucius Institute is hosting its second Chinese New Year Gala on Thursday.

Talented local and international performers will showcase a variety of Chinese arts. You can expect graceful folk dances, folk songs, Chinese instrumentals, martial arts demonstrations and a lion dance.

Dr Matt Doggett from Southampton, the overall winner, will give an illustrated talk to launch the exhibition tonight.

Matt’s image, Gannet Jacuzzi won the Coast and Marine category before going on to take the overall title. Captured on a remote location off the north coast of Scotland, the image shows both the raw power and the grace of gannets as they dive, highlighting their amazing underwater abilities.
