Police are tonight questioning five people after a man was shot dead in a Southampton flat.

Hampshire Constabulary has named 23-year-old Jamal Jones as the man who died following the incident in St Mary Street at 11am.

Five people have been arrested on suspicion of his murder.

Armed police and a dog unit swooped on the street yesterday after reports of gun shots.

Despite the best efforts of a police officer, who gave him CPR at the scene, and medical staff, Mr Jones was pronounced dead at Southampton General Hospital.

He died from wounds which are believed to have been caused by a hand gun, with a post mortem taking place today.

The gun has not yet been recovered.

Police have arrested five people were arrested following the shooting - a 36-year-old woman, a 21-year-old man, a 41-year-old man and two 18-year-old teenage boys.

It is believed all of them were around the scene at the time of shooting.

Chief Inspector Craig Dibdin from Southampton Central Police Station said: “We understand the public may have some concerns of safety due to the nature of this incident.

“We do not believe the public are in any danger as we are following a number of lines of enquiry that cause us to believe at this time this is a drug-related incident where the victim and suspects were known to each other is some way, and this incident has occurred as a result of their criminal activity.

“We will continue to have a police presence in and around the St Mary's area while the investigation at the premises continues.”

Police are appealing for anyone who was in Ladbrokes on St Mary Street between 9am and 11am yesterday, or who may have any information, to contact the Hampshire Major Investigation Team on 101, quoting Operation Emetic.
