THE UK's top breast cancer surgeons were in Winchester today for a training event aimed at helping to reduce the number of people dying each year from the disease.

The 150 doctors will also be subjected to a survey by charity group No More Breast Cancer after recent research suggested more and more women were having their breasts amputated to beat the killer cancer.

The charity says the rising number of women having mastectomies is alarming and is now trying to draw up expert advice on the best ways to prevent cancer appearing in the first place.

A spokesman for the charity, said: "Much as we welcome improvements in the treatment of breast cancer, and surgical advances, the gains they represent are cancelled out by the malign effect of the increasing incidence of the disease. Overall it is maiming and killing more women."
