POLICE investigating the suspicious death of a man in Southampton have made a second arrest.

A 47-year-old woman has now been detained in custody following the arrest of a 42-year-old man after the discovery of a body in flats run by the Society of St James in Cranbury Avenue on Thursday afternoon.

Detectives have described the death of the 62-year-old man, who has not yet been identified, as suspicious.

A post-mortem was being carried out at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester, last night.

Meanwhile, police investigations continued yesterday as detectives tried to piece together information surrounding the incident.

They continued to question people living in neighbouring flats yesterday as well as nearby residents in the hope of discovering how the man died.

A police presence remained on the short tree-lined road although cordons were lifted yesterday afternoon after scenes of crime officers wound up investigations.

Society of St James bosses revealed yesterday that the man had been living in the hostel for several years.

Trevor Pickup of the Society of St James said: "We can confirm that we are responsible for the housing of this man.

"The hostel where he had lived for a number of years is part of a housing project for homeless people in the city.

"We are now collaborating with police to find out what happened."

Officers are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen anything or anyone acting suspiciously in the area from about midday on Wednesday until 2pm on Thursday.
