CAPTAIN Steven Young, currently Harbour Master at Associated British Ports' (ABP) Southampton docks, has been promoted to the post of deputy port manager.

Southampton's harbour master since October 2004, a role which includes responsibility for the enormous number of vessels, both commercial and leisure, that use the Solent and Southampton Water, Captain Young has worked at the port of Southampton for 12 years.

A master mariner, Captain Young joined ABP as deputy harbour master for Southampton in 1990, remaining in the role for more than nine years. After this, he spent five years as port manager for ABP's ports of Barrow and Silloth in Cumbria, before returning here.

He is married with three children.

Doug Morrison, Southampton port director, said: "As well as being a competent and reliable harbour master, Steven has played a major role in formulating a sustainable strategy to increase our annual container capacity, by some 85 per cent to at least 3.7 million container units, which has the potential to be one of the most exciting developments here for many years.''
