AN elderly lady had a lucky escape after her retirement flat caught fire this morning.
Fire officers say discarded smoking material sparked a small fire in the bedroom of a property in St Francis House, Edelvale Road, Southampton, at around 5.15am.
The fire took hold on the bed but occupant, an 85-year-old lady, managed to tackle the flames before firefighters attended the scene.
She was checked over by paramedics at the scene.
The bedroom suffered minor damage.
One crew from Hightown fire station was sent to the incident.
A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service warned people of the dangers of smoking in bed.
