POLICE in Hampshire are still investigating the cause of a fire in which a 44-year-old woman was killed.

Officers dealing with the mystery blaze at Brambridge House at Colden Common are waiting to speak to the parents of the woman before they identify her.

It is believed the woman, who is from the local area was staying at her parents' flat in the Grade II listed building while they are currently overseas.

Emergency services were called to the 16th century mansion, which lies beside the River Itchen off Kiln Lane, after a neighbour tried to enter the burning apartment but was beaten back by the smoke.

Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus entered the house and removed the woman, but she had suffered severe burns and later died in the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester.

Police are not treating the fire, which occurred at about 12.15pm on Tuesday as suspicious.
