A 96-YEAR-OLD greatgrandmother has told how she was confronted by burglars in her own bedroom.

As reported yesterday, Lucy Cass, was awoken by the two intruders, but at first thought they were her step-daughter and son-in-law and went back to sleep.

But when she woke again soon after, she discovered she had been burgled and jewellery, cash and a watch of great sentimental value had been taken.

The raiders had even cut her telephone line to stop her calling for help.

Her home of 37 years in Weston, Southampton, was ransacked by the intruders after 3am yesterday.

Mrs Cass described how she woke up to find two people in her bedroom.

The mother of three said: “I was half-awake and I saw two people at the bottom of the bed, but I thought it was my step-daughter and son-inlaw.

“One of them said: ‘It’s all right’ and they walked out.”

But when she woke up and went downstairs shortly after, she saw the mess the burglars had made.

Although her phone line had been cut, Mrs Cass raised the alarm through her Careline emergency call-out device that she wears around her neck.

The burglars had stolen some jewellery, about £50 in cash and a ninecarat gold, Longines watch.

The watch had been presented to her for 25 years’ service at aircraft manufacturer Hawker Siddeley (formerly Folland) in Hamble.

Mrs Cass, who has six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, said: “It has shaken me up a bit. I can’t believe what has happened.

“I didn’t think that at 96 this kind of thing would happen to me.”

Step-daughter Jane Bryan said: “We’re all traumatised about it.

“It’s unforgivable. They knew looking at her that she was an old lady.”
