A FORMER Romsey man has been awarded the MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours.
He is Paul Davies, the son of June and the late John Davies.
Paul has championed disabled people’s rights in Brazil where he now lives. He’d already received recognition for his work by the Brazilian government and Lions International.
Paul moved to South America 22 years ago and has helped gain acceptance for the disabled in Rio de Janeiro’s famous and eye-catching carnivals.
He established a samba school for the disabled and managed to persuade Brazilian authorities to allow the disabled to take part in carnival parades.
Mrs Davies said she is proud of what her son has achieved in Brazil and for getting the MBE.
“We are very proud of him getting the MBE and think he’s done very well. This came as a big surprise to him and indeed it was a big surprise to me too. He’s done a lot of work out there in Brazil,” said Mrs Davies.
