THE STARS of Hollywood drew the crowds and helped make this year’s Totton carnival one of the biggest yet.
From Mickey Mouse to Superman and Dorothy, famous faces from the big screens dotted the streets as the “at the movies” themed cavalcade of 40 floats roamed through the town for the annual celebration.
And there was even an Paralympian to add that extra bit of sparkle, with Team GB’s wheelchair rugby star Aaron Phipps opening the extravaganza.
In true silver screen style there were a few moments of drama.
The first saw one spectator chased down to confiscate his bucket of water balloons – preventing a re-enactment of the controversial water bomb attack of 2004, which saw the carnival’s insurance costs spiral after one woman sued for damages after allegedly being injured by one.
The other saw marshals having to roll a car into a side street after its owner had parked it along the parade route, blocking the way for the floats.
But despite these obstacles, the carnival proved a hit with the hundreds who lined the streets to cheer along those taking part, including Acron’s Pre-school who did a Bug’s Life-themed float and Asda who recreated the Wizard of Oz.
Jake Carter, one of the organisers, said: “It was a great event with one of the biggest turnouts we have had for years, with a host of magical floats.
“Now we have to build on that to make next year’s centenary celebrations even better.”
So far more than £3,000 has been raised for this year’s chosen charities, which include ABF – The Soldiers Charity, with money still rolling in.
Next year the carnival celebrates its 100th anniversary and preparations are already under way to make it the best yet.
