RESIDENTS had to be evacuated from a high-rise block of flats yesterday.

Units from across the city were called to the fire at Telephone House in Briton Road, Southampton, just before 1pm.

The alarm was raised by a resident after the automatic fire alarm was triggered by smoke coming from a neighbouring property.

The first floor was evacuated while firefighters entered the building and broke into the flat where they found smoke coming from a pot of food that had been left on the cooker.

Fans were used to clear the floor of smokelogging but no significant damage had been caused by the fire itself.
