SEA creatures were washed up in a Hampshire village at the weekend - albeit in a fantasy world.

These mermaids, squids, sharks, sea urchins and other ocean life were the creations of revellers at Lockerley and East Dean Carnival Fete near Romsey.

The eye-catching parade in warm sunshine had the theme Under the Sea and organisers hailed the procession a huge success.

Former Saints boss Lawrie McMenemy opened the fete and his wife Annie presented the prize money to the carnival parade winners.

Welcoming fete-goers Mr McMenemy who was wearing a suit said: “I feel a bit overdressed coming from where I do in Gateshead. We don’t get weather like this there. I’ve never been to Lockerley Fete before, but I will say it’s a magnificent show and any money raised today stays in the village and that is very important.”

Acorn Community Pre-School (above) scooped the top float award with its striking giant octopus named Ollie with its legs dangling over the back of the tractor-drawn exhibit which also included a shipwreck, giant anchor and colourful fish decorated by the children who were dressed in mermaid, shark and diving outfits and swimming gear.

Runners up in the float category was Lockerley Brownies and the pack’s exhibit included dolphins and plenty of water- quirting fun by the youngsters.

Lockerley Rainbows turned spectators’ heads too with their balloon-decked float and their exhibit included mermaids, octopus and a deep sea diver and it took third prize in its category.

Top walking exhibit were Lockerley Guides who transformed plastic brollies into shimmering jelly fish.

Lockerley Cubs were runners up in the same category with their fishing net filled with sea creatures which included jelly fish, lobsters and crabs.

Third walking prize went to Lockerley Beavers whose display included three divers, two octopuses and two sharks.

Also in the parade which was led by a Charles Burrell Steam roller driven by Nick Isaac, were Lockerley and East Dean Carnival’s ‘royals’, the queen, 14-year-old Rose Van Der Schee, court ladies, Lucy Meehan, Isabella Lush and flower girls, Chloe Mansfield and Sophie Thomson.

They travelled in a vintage truck owned by the Cole family.

Attractions at the fete included a performance by Romsey Old Cadets Carnival Showband which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, duck races, zorbing, a classic car display, skittles, beat the golie competition and a birds of prey exhibition by Nomansland-based Forest Falconry.
