FREE NHS hearing aids are now available on the high street for Southampton’s over-55s thanks to the launch of a new service.
Optique Opticians and The Hearing Company have been given the green light by Hampshire health bosses to deliver NHS hearing assessments on their behalf.
This includes the hearing test, the fitting and supply of digital hearing aids, batteries and aftercare, all free of charge to the patient.
It is hoped the move will reduce waiting times and deliver a more accessible and flexible service for patients, with the six branches across the city working alongside GPs.
Paul Smith, from Optique Opticians and The Hearing Company, said: “Traditionally NHS hearing aids have only been available from hospitals, but we are delighted to be working with the local CCG to offer this free service on the high street alongside NHS eye care, all under one roof.
“This service is a huge benefit to NHS patients, improving care locally and offering more choice, with appointments at times to suit patients’ lifestyles.
“With the over-55s now able to choose which hearing aid supplier they are referred to by their GP, hearing care is simpler, faster, more convenient and easier to access – a positive outcome for both the patient and the NHS.”
