THE great and the good of Winchester commemorated the tenth anniversary of a city garden last weekend.

Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire Dame Mary Fagan was among the guests at Hyde Abbey Garden’s event on Saturday.

A crowd of around 50 people gathered to hear choirs from St Bede School and Hyde900 perform.

Dame Mary, who was visiting the garden for the first time since opening it ten years ago, said: “I’m delighted to be here. The garden looks absolutely splendid and I hope I am asked to come back in ten years’ time.”

She also viewed a glass plaque created by local artist Tracey Sheppard, that was restored last year after being smashed in 2010.

City councillor Sue Nelmes, chairman of the Friends of Hyde Abbey Garden, said: “The garden is now paying dividends thanks to people working on it. It’s wonderful so many local people have come out today.”
