THE countdownis on.
There are just 12 days to go until a herd of rhinos will be popping up in streets and parks across Southampton as the Go! Rhino’s public art extravaganza goes live.
The sculptures have been sponsored, the designs have been chosen and the painting has been completed, ready for the official launch of the rhino trail that promises to give Southampton its “wow” factor.
The “world class” mass public event vows to boost business across the region, while creating an unforgettable day out for families who embark on the rhino finding mission.
A total of 36 businesses have snapped up the chance to be part of Marwell Wildlife’s project, buying their own life-sized sculptures which will be showcased throughout the city for ten weeks.
One of those is Williams Shipping, which is helping Marwell to install the rhinos into their positions, as well as offering up their warehouse to provide a safe home for the herd ahead of the big event.
Director Jonathan Williams said: “Williams Shipping are delighted to be supporting Marwell Wildlife, The Rose Road Association and Wessex Heartbeat’s High 5 Appeal in this exciting exhibition which we hope will bring visitors into our city from far and wide.”
Schools have also got involved in the Daily Echo-backed event, with 61 signing up for their very own mini rhinos which they have decorated themselves, ready for display in city shops.
Kirstie Mathieson, Go! Rhinos’ project manager, said: “An event of this scale can only happen with the support of the local business community and schools and we thank them very much.
“They are not only supporting two local charities but they are also helping us build a fantastic, fun and family friendly event for Southampton.”
When the trail ends, the sculptures will be auctioned off, with the proceeds being split between Marwell’s rhino conservation work, the Rose Road Association and Wessex Heartbeat’s HIGH 5 Appeal.
