A HAMPSHIRE writer is hoping for a fab reception for her play about the Beatles – when it is staged in the legendary band’s home city.

Former Daily Echo proofreader Margaret Histed’s comedy will be performed in Liverpool later this month as part of the Ticket to Write festival.

Now in its second year, the festival is devoted to plays about the Beatles. This time four of the eight plays are related to the late George Harrison, who would have been 70 this year.

Margaret’s play, The Night I Met George, is about two 16-year-old girls, Terri and Nikki, who are “the biggest fans” of the Beatles, particularly George Harrison.

Margaret, from Brockenhurst, was thrilled when her play was picked to be performed, alongside the other seven, at Liverpool’s Unity Theatre on TuesdayJuly 30. The best play, as voted for by industry professionals and the audience, will win a cash prize.

Margaret, a freelance publishers’ editor who writes in her spare time, studied playwriting under John Burgess as a member of his writers’ group at the Nuffield Theatre, Southampton.

Her short plays and monologues have been staged in London, Hedge End and Winchester.

Margaret said: “I grew up to the soundtrack of the Beatles’ music. Entering the Ticket to Write competition has given me the chance to go back to my teenage years as a fan of the Fab Four.”
