FIREFIGHTERS from across Hampshire tackled a large rubbish fire this evening.

Around 50 firefighters dealt with a fire at a landfill site near Verwood where approximately 30,000 tonnes of rubbish caught fire.

Supporting appliances from Beaulieu and Eastleigh were sent to assist responding appliances from Ringwood, Verwood and Ferndown.

The fire took hold at around 7.44pm.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said the cause of the incident is currently unknown.

GM Dan Tasker said: "The crews have worked extremely hard with the site contractors to create an effective fire break and to present the incident from escalating, bringing the incident under control".
