The family of a young father killed when he was hit by a car are organising a special event in his memory.

Steven Johnson’s mum, Ange Dandridge and his brother Sam have arranged a fun day at the Saints pub in Millbrook.

The event has been organised to raise enough money to put a bench in Mansel Park in memory of Steven and to start up a trust fund for Steven’s one-year-old son Lewi.

Hundreds of people are expected to attend what is hoped to become an annual event, on July 20.

Steven was born in Millbrook and attended Redbridge Community School but had since moved to Romsey.

The 20-year-old father was expected at the birth of his second child when he was hit by a Vauxhall Astra while walking on the A3057 near Romsey in April. The event will kick off when Steven’s friends take on punters from the pub in a football match at 1pm in honour of Steven who loved football and supported Liverpool.

During the event a Liverpool Football club replica shirt printed with Steven’s name and names of his friends and family will be presented to his family and put on the wall of the pub.

Friends, family and well wishers will also get the opportunity to write messages on balloons which will be released together during the day.

There will be face painting, a bouncy castle and live music from local musicians, including from Steven’s childhood friend, Charley Macaulay who performed at his funeral in May.

Steven’s 17-year-old brother Sam, a student at Southampton City College, from Orion Close, Lordshill, and their mum Ange, 44, an assistant shop manager, organised the event together.

Sam said: “We just wanted to organise a day when everyone thinks about him.

“This is our send-off from my mum and me.”

Fundraising for Steven’s bench has already begun as his best friend, 20-year-old council worker Jake Bisson, from Millbrook, has raised more than £400 and family friend Lyn Figgins, 49, a Body Shop consultant has raised more than £200.
