MORE than £3m will be spent on installing a stone breakwater near the entrance of Cowes harbour on the Isle of Wight in a bid to boost tourism.
The Homes and Communities Agency will invest £3.16m on the 400-metre stone structure to give boats extra protection from high winds and tides.
It is hoped the move will extend the sailing season, generating millions of pounds from extra visitors and increased trade for local cafes, hotels and businesses.
Construction work will start later this year and take about 12 months to complete.
Cowes Harbour Commission is also contributing £3m.
