IT was a brief but memorable first visit for the world's newest cruise ship, Norwegian Pearl, that came alongside to enjoy a series of celebrations in Southampton.

Thousands of representatives from the shipping and travel industries boarded Norwegian Pearl to tour the ship and take part in celebrations, including a gala dinner, during her short stay in Southampton before the vessel departed today for the transatlantic crossing to her home base in America.

Among the many guests were double Olympic gold medallist, James Cracknell and television presenter and adventurer, Ben Fogle, who spent more than 50 days rowing across the Atlantic in an open boat.

Built in Germany, Norwegian Pearl has ten restaurants, 14 bars and show lounges, a three deck-high theatre and 1,233 staterooms.

It can accommodate up to 2,800 passengers and 1,010 crew.

The most luxurious suites are ten separate and exclusive courtyard villas with their own private area of deck and a butler.

The ship arrived in the city yesterday, looming out of the darkness to make a dramatic entry in Southampton.

With her decks brightly lit up against the pre-dawn gloom, Norwegian Pearl slowly eased her way up Southampton Water to berth in the city's Eastern Docks for the start of a series of glittering events to mark the ship's entry into service.

Even the dark sky and drizzle could not overshadow or dampen the colourful effect of her lively livery featuring a series of bright, distinctive designs all along the sides of her hull.
