HARBOUR Lights reopens this weekend after a major refurbishment, the first in its 18 year existence on Southampton’s waterfront.
Following a gala evening for members last night with an early screening of the hotly anticipated Lovelace, it’s back to business.
It’s a quarter of a century celebration tomorrow with a showing of Akira, one of the most celebrated animated movies of all time.
Neo-Tokyo is about to E.X.P.L.O.D.E.
Katsuhiro Otomo’s debut animated feature had its Japanese premiere in July 1988. We are very proud to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of what is undoubtedly, one of the most celebrated animated movies of all time. Voted by Empire readers as one of the top 100 best films ever and cited by everyone from James Cameron, Ridley Scott, Daft Punk and Kanye West as a massive influence on their work, Akira kick-started the anime business all over the world, opening the doors for everything from Pokémon to Princess Mononoke.
Beyond its stunning visuals and kinetic action, its sci-fi plotting and spy-flick style, it’s also an intricate political thriller, with reluctant underclass heroes taking on a corrupt and cynical establishment. Military experiments, government conspiracies and drugged-up bikers dressed as clowns drag the viewer on a thrill ride from here to infinity.
Akira has a one-off screening tomorrow night.
