FACES were stuffed – but no records were broken.
Despite their best efforts, brave volunteers could not set a world doughnut eating best at Greggs in Portswood, Southampton, yesterday.
They would have had to polish off six jam doughnuts in just three minutes without licking their lips just to equal the previous best, but that proved too much of a mouthful.
Even so the event raised nearly £100 for the Greggs Foundation, the company’s charity that hands out grants to good causes.
Echo man Michael Carr, above, tried to break the record:
"I knew I would be in for a tough time.
"When the challenge began I had a simple tactic – avoid
the jam.
"But as I munched my way through my first doughnut, the red stuff seeped outstraight on to my chin, knocking me out of my stride.
"A minute later and I was on to my second doughnut, knowing this was make or break.
"As I ate increasingly large chunks – the realisation
that my three minutes were almost up dawned upon me.
"I mustered my last bit of eating energy but it was
over, just two doughnuts in three minutes.
"On the bright side, this means my diet will improve as I won’t be able to face another doughnut for a year."
