PLANS to convert a century-old cinema building in Southampton into flats will be decided next week.

The city council’s planning and rights of way panel will decide on Tuesday whether to grant permission for the proposals at the building in Portsmouth Road, Woolston.

Under the outline plans, most of the current building will be taken down and replaced with 11 flats, but its facade would remain and become part of the new development.

The building was opened in 1912 as the Picture House cinema, but that closed in 1973 and the building then became a bingo hall.

The 4,000-member New Century Bingo club closed in 2009 and it has been empty ever since.

Ahead of the meeting at the Civic Centre at 9.30am the panel is recommended to delegate powers to the council’s planning and development manager, who will grant permission.
