Southampton newborn Adam Miell was the first to be presented with a commemorative silver penny - when he was born just ten minutes after Prince of Cambridge.

All babies born on the same day as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's first child will receive a limited edition coin to mark the royal occasion.

Proud parents Marc and Beverly Miell, both 29, celebrated the birth of Adam Michael Miell at Princess Anne Hospital, in Southampton.

His arrival at 4.34pm yesterday- ten minutes after Kate Middleton, 31, gave birth to the as yet un-named heir to the throne.

Adam is the couple's first child and was 12 days overdue. He was born by caesarean section, weighing 7lbs 14oz.

The Royal Mint - makers of the nation's currency - have produced 2,013 of the commemorative pennies, which are struck with the year of their birth.

The coin was presented to Adam in a blue pouch inside a card decorated with a teddy bear and the message: "Solid sterling silver good luck penny."

It features a shield of the Royal Arms, with the three lions, the Scottish lion rampant and the harp of Ireland.

Girls will receive the coin in a pink pouch.

Crossing the palm of a newborn baby with silver is traditionally seen as a way of wishing them wealth and good health throughout their life.

Pharmacist Marc, from Southampton, said: "We knew our dates and Kate's dates were very similar, and there was therefore a chance we could give birth around the same time.

"Bev and I have followed all the developments closely ever since.

"We are both very patriotic and keen royalists, so it's great to share this moment with royalty.

"We wish the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge the best of luck."

Marc said Bev, also a pharmacist, and Adam are doing well.

He added: "We knew The Royal Mint was planning to give silver pennies to babies born today.

"But we had no idea that we would be the first to receive one.

"We're over the moon and want to thank The Royal Mint for their kind gesture.

"It's a special day for us and we're excited to be part of the celebrations."

Parents of children born on July 22, 2013, have 60 days to claim the coin, by applying through The Royal Mint's Facebook page.
