FRIENDS and family of Steven Johnson, who died when he was hit by a car, came together at the weekend to raise funds in the 20-year-old's memory.
Around 300 people packed into the grounds of The Saints pub, in Millbrook, where Steven himself had been a regular.
Many wore Liverpool FC shirts, some emblazoned with “Stevey J” and the number “8”, others with “RIP”, on the back in honour of Steven, a massive Liverpool fan.
Steven’s mother Ange Dandridge and his brother Sam organised the fun day, which will fund a memorial bench in Mansel Park, opposite the pub.
Any money left over will go towards a trust fund for Steven’s one-year-old son Lewi.
More than £1,200 was raised and the memorial day now looks set to become an annual event.
It was at The Saints pub that Steven’s father Jimmy Johnson last saw his son as they had a drink after work on the night he died.
Jimmy, 47, a fencer, from Romsey, was wearing a T-shirt worn and signed by footballer Steven Gerrard given to the family by Liverpool Football Club, who had heard of the tragedy.
“He would have been over the moon [with the event] – he’s probably in there now drinking his drink,” he said.
Steven, a former Redbridge Community School pupil was born in Millbrook, but had moved to Romsey.
He had been looking forward to becoming a father for the second time when he was hit by a Vauxhall Astra while walking on the A3057 near Romsey in April.
A football match at Test Park, saw a pub side take on a team of Steven’s friends.
There was also a bouncy castle and live music, including from Charley Macaulay, who sang at Steven’s funeral and balloons were also released.
Wiping away tears, Steven’s mother Ange, 44, of Orion Close, Lordshill, said: “It chokes me up, it’s amazing.
“I can’t put it into words how I feel with what people have done and put themselves out.
“It makes it so special.”
Steven’s brother Sam, 17, a student at Southampton City College, said: “It’s unbelievable really that they’re all here for just Steven, it’s overwhelming.”
A 74-year-old man who was helping police with their inquiries in connection with Steven Johnson’'s death has been released with no further action.
