IT’S the quintessential English children’s story and a perfect fit for a summer’s evening in Hampshire.
So visitors to Hursley, near Winchester, this weekend are sure to love an outdoor performance of The Wind in The Willows.
Written in 1908 by Kenneth Grahame, it is brought to life in the beautiful grounds of IBM UK’s Hursley Park by The Point Youth Theatre, based in Eastleigh.
The production follows the adventures of a group of hapless friends Mole, Ratty, Badger and of course Mr Toad.
This classic story of friendship and bravery sees our heroes come face-to-face with nasty ferrets, reluctant rabbits and the cruel weasels as they journey from the riverbank to magnificent Toad Hall, through the perilous Wild Wood and finally to battle.
It’s also full of laughs from start to finish, thanks to Mr Toad and his hapless exploits with motor cars that lead him into a lot of trouble with the law.
Daniel Hill, drama development manager at The Point said: “This is a very exciting production for The Point Youth Theatre, involving over 60 young people from our youngest to our oldest members.
“This year is the Point Youth Theatre’s 18th birthday and we want to make it a year to remember. This production will certainly help.”
The Point’s version of the classic tale has been adapted by Mike Kenny.
Mr Hill is directing the production with original music from Ivan Stott and David Pearce, set and costumes by Carl Davies and technical design by Tim Slater.
The youth theatre returns to the open air following the sell-out success of their 2011 show The Jungle Book.
The Wind in the Willows runs until Sunday with evening performances at 7pm, and a matinee tomorrow at 1pm.
Tickets are £10 and £8.50 for concessions and the production is suitable for children six and above. To book call the box office on 023 8065 2333.
