SHE is about to find out whether she needs lifesaving surgery.
Krystall Barker was born with part of her heart missing and faces a crunch hospital date with world-leading surgeons in London.
But the youngster from Southampton will at least arrive in style thanks to the generosity of local businesses.
Krystall faced a long train trip to Great Ormond Street Hospital where she has a vital appointment with some of the world’s best heart and lung specialists.
But thanks to businesses rallying round, the eight-year-old and her family will be chauffeur driven up to London in a brand new car, eliminating the stress such a train journey could cause the youngster who can only walk a few steps before getting breathless.
She will also be treated to a day out to the famous Hamley’s toy store and her parents will be able to spend the night in a nearby B&B so that they don’t have to make the whole journey in one exhausting day, Krystall was born with a chamber missing from her heart, leading her to have major surgery on the specialist children’s heart unit at Southampton General Hospital, when she was just three days old.
Her dad Gordon was one of the many parents who supported the Daily Echo’s Have a Heart campaign to save the unit from the axe, helping to collect some of the 250,000 signatures that the petition secured before it was delivered to Downing Street.
Sadly, an operation when she was eight months old saw Krystall’s left lung develop malformations, which have grown steadily worse over the last few years.
In March, her parents, Loretta and Gordon, of Lordshill, were told that the team at Southampton could do no more for the youngster’s lungs and she was referred to experts at Great Ormond Street Hospital, where she may need a heart and lung transplant.
After hearing the plight of the family, Richmond Hyundai have donated the use of a brand new Sante Fe off roader to drive the family to and from London.
Double-glazing specialist Novaseal, based in Fareham and Hollybrook Allotments have donated the money to ensure her parents are able to stay in a nearby B&B and take Krystall to Hamley’s toy shop as a special treat before her appointment.
